MR Ernest Bevin, Foreign Secretary, today gave to the United Nations Assembly Britain's pledge of wholehearted support to the organization.

To show Britain's intentions, he announced that negotiations have started for placing Tanganyika, the Cameroons, and Togoland under the trustee system, and that Transjordan is to be established as a sovereign independent state.

"War is outlawed," Mr Bevin said. "The aggressor can no longer look forward to a halo of glory and statues created to his memory.

Instead, he will be remembered by the scaffold and the hangman's rope." 125 YEARS AGO

Echo du Nord reproduces from the Avenir du Luxembourgh the following statement from St Petersburg: On Sunday last the Emperor of Russia gave a great banquet at the winter palace, at which the princes and princesses of the Imperial family, the foreign ambassadors, and the grand officers of State were present. At the end of the banquet, his Majesty was handed a telegram, and a few minutes afterwards rose, and proposed the following toast: "I receive a message from my uncle, the King of Prussia, informing me that his armies have taken Mont Avron, from whence they can efficiently bombard the forts of Paris. I drink to Prussia and to the Emperor of Germany." All the guests raised their glasses with the exception of the Cesarewitch, who broke his glass on the table, and respectfully saluted the Emperor, gave his arm to Cesareona, and left the banqueting chamber, and the following day was ordered to keep his apartments during eight days. All Frenchmen of distinction residing in St Petersburg called and inscribed their names at the residence of the Cesarewitch.
