A DOTING grand-dad on his way to pick-up his grandson from school was killed in a car accident yesterday.

Widower Ernest Smith, aged 62, of Cressingham Road, Bolton, was crossing Deane Church Lane, Deane, at 2.40pm when he was hit by a Golf GTi heading towards Middle Hulton.

Police say Mr Smith had been crossing the road near Paris Street and was just a few feet from the pavement when the accident happened.

He was dead on arrival at Bolton Royal Infirmary.

His step-daughter, 24 year old Allison Hibbert, of Brentwood Drive, Farnworth, said he regularly picked-up four year old Daniel from St Ethelbert's Primary School.

Allison was due to give birth two days ago and sobbed: "He'll never get to see the new baby."

Allison's mum, Alice, died two years ago. The driver of the black Golf, a 23 year old man from Bolton, and his three passengers were taken to Bolton Central police station for questioning then released pending further inquiries.

Anyone who saw the accident and, in particular, anyone who saw the black Golf GTi prior to the crash is asked to police on Bolton 522466.
