The woman, who is believed to live on the Salford/Bolton border, was taken to Bolton Royal Infirmary yesterday.
She was later transferred to the intensive care unit at Hope Hospital Salford.
Public health chiefs have not released further details.
But they say the case is not connected to that of 37-year-old Farnworth man Fred Palmer who died from meningitis on Thursday, as reported in last night's BEN.
