SIR: I agree whole heartedly with your editorial pointing out that schools should be teaching children the difference between right and wrong. Unfortunately, education has lost its way. There is more to education than job training and obtaining qualifications. Education is for life. After all, the average person spends less than 16 per cent of the hours of his life at work. The successful person, in my opinion, is the happy person.

From my experience the people at the top of the tree are no more contented than the majority of us at, or near ,the bottom of the pile - often the reverse.

We happy people enjoy music, reading, country walks, good conversation, the company of children, family life, helping others. All these are free and available to everyone.

Any child not taught the value of these is missing out and has not been taught properly for life in the world today. We have let the child down.

PSE (Personal and Social Education) should be given a high priority and become an exam subject compulsory for every child. If this is at the expense of other subjects, we will have to accept this.

What a person is and how the person lives is far more important than what a person knows.
