SIR: I read with interest Tom Sackville's views regarding Dr Tait's remarks about the need for teachers to teach schoolchildren the difference between right and wrong (BEN January 18).
Mr Sackville states that this was "music to his ears" and further comments that "the trendy let-it-all-hang-out brigade are generally far removed from the classroom".
I would suggest to Mr Sackville that it is he who is far removed from the classroom! To suggest that schools do not already teach children right from wrong is an insult to the teaching profession.
A local school's handbook states: "Teachers have high expectations of children's behaviour and achievement and give them the confidence to succeed in all aspects of school life." The ethos of the school is based upon - "mutual trust and respect for all individuals".
Yet again, teachers are being blamed for society's ills. The Tory government should not continue to use those in the teaching profession as scapegoats for their own failings.
