SIR: I refer to the article about Parking Squeeze (BEN, January 18).
While not wishing to encourage more cars entering Bolton, there are spaces which could accommodate several hundred more cars without taking up more land. There are open spaces over the railway line from Bolton railway station to the fire station and beyond. For private cars only, a light decking over these spaces would suffice. Such a scheme would provide revenue for the railway (it is hoped to keep down fares) and help prevent a drastic increase in Bolton car park charges. Incidentally, do we know how much congestion is presently caused by cars going round and round looking for a parking space? A properly conducted traffic census should provide useful and interesting information.
