AN ELDERLY car crash victim - discharged from hospital after several days' treatment - died from his injuries 24 hours after being rushed back in.
Mr Ralph Tonge, 70, of Sandy Lane, Hindley, was initially released from Wigan Infirmary after being treated several days for a fractured sternum - believed to have been a minor chest injury.
However, days later, he was re-admitted suffering with chest pains. He died the following day.
A post mortem confirmed that his death was as a result of the injuries he had initially received in the car accident which happened on New Years Day.
Police said Mr Tonge had been driving his Vauxhall Astra along Sandy Lane, when he was involved in an accident with a Toyota Carina, driven by Terence Heaton, 42, of Parkway, Westhoughton, who escaped uninjured.
The coroner has been notified of Mr Tonge's death.
