LOCAL Euro MP Gary Titley is "siding with consumers" by opposing moves to lift the ban on the use of hormones and growth stimulants in meat.
Last week in Strasbourg he joined Labour MEP colleagues in voting for the EU embargo to be upheld.
"The EU is coming under enormous pressure from the United States to lift the ban because it is hitting American beef exports," said Mr Titley. Under threat of US legal action, Euro officials appeared to be on the verge of caving in to American demands. But Mr Titley said: "I hope they will now pay due attention to the opinion of the European Parliament, which overwhelmingly passed a resolution calling for the ban to remain."
He added that stories about chemicals in meat rightly caused consumers "massive concern".
"If consumer confidence is to be restored, then the ban must remain."
