A WOMAN from Westhoughton created a stink - after raw sewage filled the bath of her holiday apartment in Lanzarote. Lisa Quigley said gurgling noises, a bad smell, a shower which would not drain and a toilet bowl which filled to the top were just some of the problems she encountered. But the holiday turned into a nightmare when Lisa woke up one morning to find raw sewage in the bath.

She complained to reception and after half an hour, a maintenance man visited the apartment, only to leave again saying it would be fixed later.

"But we still hadn't washed and there was no way we were going to set foot again in that disgusting bathroom," said Lisa, of New Drake Green. "We asked for another room to shower in and were given a room that had just been vacated but not serviced. We were expected to use an unclean bathroom with towels used by previous occupiers."

Lisa and her partner decided to wash in the kitchen sink in their original apartment and use the toilet in reception.

Following the incident, the couple could not bear to use the shower and instead used facilities at their parents' hotel in the same resort, Playa Blanca.

Lisa wrote to tour company First Choice when they arrived home from the holiday in November and enclosed photographs of the raw sewage in the bath. Last weekend - two months later - she received a reply with an apology but no offer of compensation.

"It was a complete waste of hard-earned money and not the relaxing, enjoyable, much needed holiday we were looking forward to," said Lisa.

The BEN tried repeatedly to contact First Choice but no-one was available.
