PRINCE Michael of Kent was injured today during trials for the world four-man bobsled championships at Cervina, Italy. He was dragged half-out of his overturned sled for 300 yards before he righted it. He was picked up at the finishing line with cuts all over his face, and doctors said later that he would have to withdraw from the championships. 50 YEARS AGO
THE number of indictable offences recorded in Bolton during the past year was 833, the largest figure on record, and an increase of 144 over the previous year.
However, the figure of 833 does not include reports of 141 motor vehicles taken during the year, as these are recorded under the Road Traffic Act, 1939, as non-indictable offences. 125 YEARS AGO
A GENTLEMAN who was going down the Goodaloor Ghaut during the late dark night thought he saw the branch of a tree on fire. Having forgotten his match box - this was due to a most providential occurrence - he drew his cigar case, took a cigar, and went up to the fire to light it. Something snatched the cigar from his hand and bolted. It was a tiger, whose eyes the gentleman had mistaken for the branch on fire. Either the tiger had a taste for tobacco or the gentleman has a partiality for strong drink.
