LONGSIGHT A are Division One champions and Holcombe Brook have taken the Division Two title in the BSF Indoor Tennis League.
Longsight B made it a one-two for the club as they snatched runners-up spot in Division One and the teams' combined successes reflect the ability and the team spirit of the players lead by David Gregory.
Bev Gregory Yvonne Lancester have been ably supported by Sue McLelland and Ilona Kitburn while among the men the younger talents of Paul Nicholson and Peter Smith - and on one occasion David Whittle - have complemented the experience and stability of Ray Howarth and Bill Roscoe.
Holcombe's success has similarly been due more to team spirit and a settled side than to any marked superiority in ability. Mike and Sheila Tasker, Barbara Gibson, Pat Black and Steve Reece have performed admirably.
Walkers C were prospective candidates for re-election at the start of the campaign but they have gone on to win half their matches and collect some significant scalps.
Barbara and Jeff Millington, Sue Prendergast and Steve Gallagher and Dave and Angie Haycock have again formed a largely settled side.
In last weekend's matches Markland Hill fielded a side which gave an indication of their strength in depth in the defeat of Holcombe. Carol Shacklady, Christine Glassbrook, Nigel Horsler and Ian Baron were in irresistible form as they won well. Guild Hall - forcefully lead throughout the season by Ged Shepherd - suffered yet another tantalising narrow defeat, this time at the hands of Walker C. They, like Walkers A, have on occasions proved themselves a match for anyone but have suffered in the later matches from having an unsettled side.
This weekend sees the start of the handicapped knockout competition. RESULTS DIVISION 1 - Bolton CC 33 Walkers A 30; Longsight A 45 cc Harwood 12; Ellesmere 34 Longsight B 22.
Division 2 - Meadow Hill 35 Halliwell Road Meths 14; Walkers C 30 Guild Hall 29; Markland Hill 40; Holcombe Brook 14.
