SIR, - Your report of the meeting of Licensed Victuallers and Beersellers, held in Leigh, contains a few statements by Mr Lewis which are strangely at variance with the truth. He says there are only about 100 teetotallers in Tyldesley, and about 20 habitual drunkards, and asks if the population which numbers some 6,000 should be governed by 120. Now, if he takes the population he must admit that there are about one in every six under three years of age, which will be 1000 of the total number. Again, I have pleasure in informing Mr Lewis that we have over 200 members enrolled in our Band of Hope. Just to put the case the other way about, I do not suppose there are more than 30 public houses and beerhouses in Tyldesley; and I would ask is it right that these 30 should rule the 6,000 of a population? Yours &c, A Lover of the Truth.
