MR Peter Walker, Secretary of State for the Environment, talked today of the 'horror' of the derelict Hall Lane Chemical Works at Little Lever. He had been visiting a number of derelict land in Lancashire, and he said later: "There was the horror of the first site we visited at Hall Lane, where the chrome waste of a century had been piled up creating a ghastly area," he said, adding "With a real effort, in three years' time this hideous and ugly site which despoils the whole countryside could be a delightful and pretty part of Lancashire."

BRITAIN announced today that she proposed to withdraw all British naval, military and air forces from Egyptian territory. British forces have been in Egypt since 1882. Experts believe that the primary idea behind the British plan is to give Egyptians time to increase their armed forces and become possessed of the latest scientific weapons and conceptions of war.

From the Evening News, May 6, 1871
MARGARET Scanlon, married, Greenhalgh-street, and Mary Adamson, married, Rock-street, were charged with stealing a gallon jug and three quarts of beer, value 2s 2d from the beerhouse of Mr Henry Brownlow, Kay-street, on the 15th inst. Both women came into the house and inquired after a woman named Craven. Mr Brownlow went to make inquiries, and on his return he found Scanlon had gone, the other prisoner following her on his telling her that the Craven women was not there. He then found that the jug had been removed. He went subsequently to Scanlon's house, and she gave him the jug. When apprehended by police constable Bradshaw they made no reply to the charge. Adamson was discharged at court, and the other prisoner was sent to goal for 14 days' hard labour.
