BUTTER prices are rocketing, and are not likely to come down again, say grocers. The prices in the shops in Bolton this week have gone up by an average of 2p per lb., but this is only the latest in a succession of price jumps over the past month. A Manchester butter importer said there was a world-wide shortage of butter.

A SHOP in Amsterdam is exhibiting new kinds of tulips of striking colour, size and form, grown from bulbs which have been treated with X-rays. The X-ray treatment is thought to be able to change the bulbs' hereditary structure, creating completely new varieties.

AT the Borough Court this morning, Mr H.M. Richardson, solicitor, applied on behalf of Mr Charles Adams, proprietor of the Circus, in the Wholesale Market, for a licence to perform stage plays in that establishment. He said it was not the intention to stage plays in the usual perception of the term, but merely those small pieces of equestrianism, such as 'Johnny Gilpin's Ride to Brentford', which they would remember witnessing with feelings of pleasure in the days of their youth, and even later in life. The magistrates granted the licence most freely.
