A COUNCILLOR fears a planning application near the controversial Turton Heights "Birtenshaw" estate could lead to more development.

An application has been put in to build a bungalow on land at The Gatehouse, Turton Road, Bradshaw.

But Bromley Cross Tory Cllr Donald Carr warned at a planning meeting: "We could be opening up a Pandora's Box here and end up with another 100 houses."

He explained that the land was protected by a covenant and he feared it could be lost if development was allowed.

In June 1995, councillors turned down a similar scheme but there has been an appeal and a public inquiry has been arranged for September.

Councillors are to visit the site before they make a decision on the latest application.

The battle for Birtenshaw was Bolton's bitterest planning battle in the 1980s.

Barratt eventually built 288 homes on the site after 10 years of legal wrangles.
