Bolster cases, pillow cases,
Bottom sheets would go.
Fresh top sheets were luxury,
White as driven snow.
What was left of Sunday's roast,
Helped dear mother cope.
Cold meat, cabbage, boiled potatoes,
Strangely tasted "soap".
Watching out for nanny goat,
While pegging washing out.
Charged Ma with her pointed horns,
If "look-out" didn't shout.
For wash day was a busy day.
Starch and dolly blue.
Mangling and wringing out,
Making all things "new". Mrs Irene Shirley, Liskeard, Cornwall
