THE clamour for more security in schools started last year after the murder of head teacher Philip Lawrence.
Events at Dunblane highlighted the issue again. Now ministers are facing further calls for more cash to make schools safe.
Yesterday, a man was able to get inside a Bolton school and grab a pupil.
The problem must be addressed and there is no doubt that schools will not be able to improve security without extra money. We agree with the National Confederation of Parent Teacher Associations which say that what is needed is the commitment of new money provided by Government which is not already part of the education budget.
What we do not need is cash to turn schools into fortresses. No child must be made to feel that school is like a prison patrolled by guards.
