CAMPAIGNING MP Janet Anderson has welcomed the backing of rank and file bobbies for her bid to outlaw stalking.
The Police Federation conference in Scarborough voted unanimously in favour of a new criminal offence of stalking and called for a maximum penalty of five years in prison - matching the suggestion in Mrs Anderson's Bill.
Speakers attacked the Government for torpedoing the Rossendale and Darwen MP's move so they can bring in their own legislation.
Mrs Anderson said: "I am delighted that the Police Federation has come out in support of my Bill. "These are the people who have to deal with this problem, who are frustrated at their inability to help the victims and who recognise, as Labour does, that the only solution is to create a criminal offence.
"This motion is an indictment of the Government's tactics which have condemned the victims of stalking to at least a further 12 months of misery."
