By DOREEN CROWTHER IT'S a non stop charge of pulsating rhythm with enough decibels to set the ears ringing and the audience loved it. GreaseZdoesn't have to shout about its success, its legions of fans who love the 50s-style music recalling those golden days of rock 'n' roll will always be out in force to start clapping and cheering as the first note is played. Anyone who doesn't know the musical, must not expect any refinement.

The storyline is incidental to the songs and dance routines which hit the audience with all the subtlety of a steamroller.

We're talking about raw energy here and some great songs -ZSummer Nights, You're The One That I want, Grease Lightening,Zamong them - that had the audience screaming and shouting for more.

Shane Ritchie is the super-cool, right-on leader of the T Birds gang. He is laid back and sexy and can belt out a song with the best of them.

Anything he lacks in dancing technique, he more than makes up for by strutting his stuff with some style particularly during the finale which brought the audience to its feet. The attractive Helen Way also came into her own when she donned leathers and launched herself as the new-look Sandy with the raunchyZYou're The One That I Want.ZUntil then, she was required to be little Miss Perfect and sing soulfully inZSandyZandZHopelessly Devoted To You.

Alex Bourne is terrific as Kenickie (the part played previously by Ritchie). He sings the best song in the showZGrease LighteningZand is no slouch in the dancing department.

Others who make their presence felt are Craig Bantley (Doody), Drew Jaymson (Roger), Toby Hinson (Vince Fontaine) and Simon Fielding. Fielding, who plays the goofy Eugene, started his career at Bolton's Octagon Theatre.

Michelle Hooper as the tarty Rizzo shines as does Suzannah Jupp as the dizzy Frenchy. But its when they perform together that the guys and girls make the most impact.

The routines are slick and the sets lavish. Direction under David Gilmore is admirably tight. Musical director Michael England more than deserved the enthusiastic round of applause he received.

This is the one the fans want and have waited for. They won't be disappointed. Neither will Paul Nicholas who is part of the production company presenting the show. He was in the first night audience who were on their feet cheering.
