LOCAL fire service training officer Peter Gardner plans to walk the West Highland Way from Glasgow to Fort William in aid of a local housing association.

Money raised will help Irwell Valley Housing Association's supported housing scheme, in particular Fleet House in Bolton, a development for women needing a temporary home.

The money will be spent on creche equipment and toys for children, together with starter packs containing basic toiletries such as soap, shampoo, and towels for their mothers.

Most of the women are under 25 and are in supported housing for reasons such as the need to flee domestic violence.

Peter, from Bolton, who is Irwell Valley's management committee chairman, will be joined on the gruelling 95-mile walk by colleagues Ray Cook and Peter Boardman.

Peter said: "We hope to raise money for services over and above the mainstream ones.

"We will also be looking to provide our Fleet House residents with training initiatives aimed at building their confidence and self-esteem."

The West Highland Way is only the start of Peter and his colleagues' sponsored walking. He is already preparing to tackle the tougher Pennine Way in September.
