CLLR BARBARA Ronson has been installed as the new Mayor of Horwich - five years after her husband, Bob, was given the honour.
And, like Bob, Cllr Mrs Ronson has decided that during her year of office she will help the young people of the town.
She said: "During Bob's year of office he raised money for music in the local schools and collected musical instruments from very kind donors.
"I should like to follow in his footsteps by raising money and collecting unused items to help the various schools and youth organisations in the town with moderately priced projects to help in their work"
Cllr Mrs Ronson, who was nominated for Mayor by Cllr Kevan Helsby, Leader of the Council, was elected to Horwich Town Council in 1987, along with her husband, but said he became mayor first because he was bigger and liked it so much he didn't want to give the chain back.
Councillor John Bragg, retiring mayor, presented Cllr Mrs Ronson with the chain of office. Councillor Bragg said that he and his wife, Eva, had enjoyed a wonderful year in office.
Cllr Mrs Ronson's Mayoress is Mrs Fran Thomas, whose late husband, Phil, was a former Horwich councillor. Councillor Mrs Betty McCracken was elected Deputy Mayor.
"We have been to many functions and met many people and what really chuffed us was the way we were received. We were always greeted with the utmost courtesy. We had such a wonderful year which will live in our memories and hearts for as long as we live. I hope we carried out our duties in a dignified manner." I know that the town council gives generous support to many organisations, but even here we are not able to meet all requests."
Cllr Mrs Ronson said she hoped to work with organisations such as Vision Aid and the Deaf Children's Society when specialist equipment is needed, but in general she hoped to help youth clubs and other organisations with practical problems.. Much is said about problems with young people and the importance of giving them something constructive to do and yet each year there is less money in the local government pot to help make adequate provision.
