FORMER Blackpool and England international full-back Jimmy Armfield took over as manager of Bolton Wanderers today. And soon after his arrival at Burnden Park, he was busy on his first task for his new club - the chase for a couple of experienced players to help spearhead the drive from the Third Division.

NOT so long ago the harassed Bolton housewife was searching frantically for shillings to put in the gas meter. Now the situation seems to have eased but a cashier at a local bank tells me that both shillings and pence are still in short supply, the former because of meters, and the latter because of the Treasury principle of issuing threepenny pieces and halfpennies which are of less weight than the same value in pence. He complains that much time is wasted in banks counting out the many bags of half-pence which are paid over with their contents loose. Without taking into account the cost of money bags, it is calculated that the bank loses 10d in the £ on copper. 125 YEARS AGO

ON Wednesday, the annual inspection of the 7th Lancashire Militia was made at Bury by Colonel Campbell, of the 100th Regiment. There were present 794 privates besides officers, sergeants, &c. The inspection was a satisfactory one. Colonel Campbell and the men turned out in a soldierlike and creditable manner. Since last year they had had Snider rifles issued, and though the shooting was not up to the mark they might, and ought to, improve much next year. He was much struck with the steadiness of the men; the march past was good; the manual, firing, and bayonet exercises were well performed. Of the Regiment 105 have volunteered for the army reserve. The Regiment has now been disbanded.
