THE North-west Roofing training Group has developed four short courses for experienced roof sheeting and cladding operatives.
The one-day courses, which are backed by the Construction Industry Training Board, are run during an afternoon or on Saturdays at the new roofing training centre at Bolton College in Manchester Road.
They cover safety and three types of roofing systems - built-up, composite and standing seam.
They cost £60 per person and grants are available for companies registered for the training levy with CITB.
John Watson, a member of the Group and managing director of Manchester-based Blackwell, Stanistreet & Co, says contractors have traditionally trained their staff on the job, but he would like to see them take advantage of the purpose-built roofing facilities at Bolton College.
He said: "Regular training can help firms to remain competitive and improve productivity.
"These courses will enable them to find out about new materials and methods of construction, with the emphasis on safety."
