A BOLTON butcher who lost a heifer from his premises before it was due to be slaughtered has blamed the incident on an "unfortunate mistake".
As reported in last night's BEN the animal, thought by the public to be a bull, broke free from Atkinson's on Longsight, Harwood, and bolted into the grounds of Longsight CP School. It was shot in the graveyard of Longsight Methodist Church.
Atkinson's owner John Bowker said: "It pushed against a gate which was not locked. It was an unfortunate mistake."
The animal, and another taken into the school grounds to calm it, were both young beef heifers. He added: "We don't sell bull beef here, only prime quality heifer beef."
