WHAT are Bolton Council thinking of? After agreeing to think again about plans to shut two town centre toilets on Bridge Street and Nelson Square, they have now confirmed that one will close.
While we welcome the reprieve for Nelson Square, we abhor the decision to shut what are probably the busiest loos in Bolton. Close to the town's Market Hall, The Market Place, bus stops and major stores, these well-kept and much-needed toilets have proved a real convenience for generations of shoppers. The fact that they need repair and would save money is an irrelevancy when, in spite of what councillors claim, there are simply not enough available public toilets.
What is the point in pouring millions into having the kind of town centre that attracts visitors by the thousand if we don't provide vital basic facilities?
Allan Horsfall from the lobbying group Convenience echoes all our thoughts when he says he is "horrified" by the news. Come on, Bolton Council, don't shut our loos - build more of them.
