SPECIAL constables in Astley Bridge have been given a new set of wheels to help them speed up their voluntary duties.
Backed by sponsorship from North West Water, the specials will be able to drive around the area in their Ford Escort van.
The initiative is the first in the Greater Manchester force.
Until now the division's 50 specials have relied on borrowing vehicles from the regular force fleet or pounding the beat on foot.
Specials liaison officer Sgt Alan Preston said: "This generous sponsorship means that we can use our valuable resource of specials much more effectively."
The van can accommodate two officers and equipment. It will be maintained at the North West Water depot next to the police station on Crompton Way. Other sponsored vehicles could be added in future.
Anyone interested in joining the specials should contact their local police station.
