SIR: I would be most interested to know whether any of your readers could help me with my inquiries regarding the Woodhead family, who did, at one stage, live in the Bolton area?
Godfrey Woodhead (1849-1901) was married to Jane Morris, and they had four children, three of whom survived infancy ie. Arthur, Maurice and Ernest.
Godfrey Woodhead was involved with the cotton trade and worked for James Hodgkinson & Co, cotton spinners and later became managing director of John Haslam & Co., where he worked for 17 years. Apart from being closely connected with the Quakers of Bolton, he was well known on the Manchester Royal Exchange, and was involved with various philanthropic and social enterprises in Bolton, particularly the Lads' Club and the Citizens Committee on Licensing Law administration, of which he was honorary secretary. As I have said, I would be most interested for any further information on the Woodhead family, and I am particularly keen to obtain any photographs I can of the family, particularly of Godfrey Woodhead, of whom I have none. Since he was so well known in his day, it could be that some group photographs may still survive of some of the places he worked at, or organisations he was involved with, which may include him among the group photograph.
I do hope that my appeal will meet with some response.
