GOLFING history was made at St Andrews today, when for the first time in 50 years, Great Britain and Ireland scored a whitewash 4-0 victory in the foursomes in the Walker Cup match against the Americans. BOLTON Wanderers will start next season in their traditional navy blue shorts and white shirts, after two seasons in an all-white strip. 50 YEARS AGO

AS an excuse for a 'day out', the followers of the Welsh girl footballers enjoyed their Bolton trip very much, but were puzzled by their varying fortunes on the local food front. While some dined without much difficulty, others said that they could not find a satisfactory restaurant and went to the match without a proper meal. Not so the man sitting near the Press table at Bromwich-st. He had enjoyed a Lancashire dish and wanted to boast about it. 'Real cowheel pie, I had', he said 'Never tasted anything like it, man. And it was part of a three-course lunch, look you, all for 1s 9d. We cannot touch that down home, man.' 125 YEARS AGO

SIR - It is with pleasure I have read two letters in your valuable paper. Allow me a small space to state that I know of one place in Bolton where the overworking of girls is persisted in, despite the warning from the inspector (who, I must say, is very diligent). It is time this state of things be stopped, if consumption be feared. I hope no father will allow any of his daughters to go to any of these establishments unless he is assured that reasonable working hours will be observed, for I could quote cases of dreadful disaster happening to girls while at the place I have alluded to, through overworking and a scarcity of fresh air. Yours, HUMANITY.
