SIR: Cllr Howarth's remark: "But what does Mr Watson think that we can do with all our waste?" is misleading. Bolton Council does not have the responsibility to provide a landfill site for all Greater Manchester's rubbish unless they accept UK Waste's offer of £2 million a year for doing so (that's 30 pieces of silver in old money). They are betraying their local heritage, the people of Horwich and making a mockery of English Nature by allowing tipping on a 10,000 year old Site of Special Scientific Interest and an archaeological site which, once destroyed, can never be reclaimed. It is environmental vandalism at its worst from a Council that professes to be "green".
