SIR - I remember many years ago a Conservative Prime Minister returning from Europe waving a piece of paper and saying 'Peace in our time', after negotiations with one of the most wicked of world leaders - with what results.
Now we have another Conservative Prime Minister taking his kneeling mat across the Channel and returning saying: 'It is not if, but when we go into Europe'. The French president may be one of the best, but he must be made to understand that the 'real Britain' has one desire, and that is to become great once more.

THE arrival and assembly of the temporary prefabricated aluminium houses at Eldon-st., Tonge Moor, has interested crowds of sightseers. Mr T.P. Cousins, who is in charge of the erection, told an Evening News' representative that, given favourable conditions, each of the 95 houses allotted to the site could be erected in two hours. Made of aluminium, with foam concrete between the sheets to provide insulation and deaden noise, each house contains a living room, two bedrooms, bathroom and kitchen.

THE CIVIL WAR IN FRANCE
The conflagration at Paris
The Telegraph's Paris correspondent relates some horrible scenes which are occurring in the streets. Stiffened corpses are a common sight at every corner. Guards who hid themselves in the streets at points whence their comrades were driven were brought out yesterday morning and shot in the streets. Indeed, the slaughter of National Guards since Tuesday has been frightful. On this night the conflagration began. The Hotel de Ville was still smoking when the correspondent left Paris last night. So were the ashes of the Tulleries. Happily, not very much of the Louvre is destroyed, and at the Palais Royal the fire was extinguished when only a part of the building had been consumed. The Prefecture of Police is consumed. The greatest conflagration was that at the Grenier d'Abondance. The fighting has been very severe.
