DESPITE the warmer weather the tench have been reluctant to show themselves in any numbers on the Bolton Canal.
Only four were caught in Monday night's open match.
Jeff Terry Snr (Little Lever) caught two plus a skimmer for the winning weight of 3-12-8.
It was good to see John Turner frame, after all the Sharrock Brothers angler does most of the main organising and his company, Stanley Scaffolding, sponsors the final.
His 1-13-3 tench secured second place and his spot in the September final. The third and last qualifying place goes to J. Settle (unattached) who had a small tench and a jack pike for 1-7-2.
Sections: Phil Moore (MAP Elton AC) 1-6-5; Ray Sharrocks (Sharrock Bros) 1-6-5.

LORD Nelson claimed the top two places in the Old River Open match at Irlam last Sunday.
Frank Smalley was kept busy catching tench throughout the match and his weight of 25-2-0 was not only good enough to take top spot but also created a new match record.

Others: S Brown (Boathouse AC) 8-7-0; P Morris (Boathouse AC) 5-14-0; D Barret (Team Ginletts) 5-9-0.

HAT'S off to the Warrington Ladies who fish every Tuesday on the Bridgewater Canal - and to one in particular, Marion Wharmby, who has had two wins and two seconds in the first four matches.
Marion also helped her team to win the national competition with an individual seventh.
Such is the enthusiasm that they were able to muster an additional team who came third in the 'National'.
Marion's latest win was with a weight of 18-8-0 of bream, skimmers and roach caught on the pole with maggot and castor. Linda Lythgoe was second with 14-8-0 and Rose Cummings was third with 3-8-0. The group are on the lookout for more lady match anglers and if anyone is interested they should ring John Wharmby on 0161 799 9120. But before that it may well be worthwhile contacting Bolton Anglers to see if our home town can put together a winning team.
