POLICE in Greater Manchester have vowed to continue a crack down on speeding motorists after 13,000 drivers were stopped during a tough new anti-speeding campaign.

As a result of the Kill Your Speed campaign, supported by a hard-hitting advertising campaign featuring tragic Farnworth schoolgirl Tracy Kennedy, 9,000 motorists now face prosecution.

They face fines and/or penalty points on their driving licence. A further 4,000 drivers stopped by police were warned at the roadside during the last three weeks.

Traffic police equipped with radar speed guns and Gatso detection cameras have been monitoring the speed of drivers on major roads and accident blackspots throughout Bolton. Greater Manchester Police road traffic officer Insp Brian Ritson said: "No responsible driver could want to be responsible for a tragedy. Speeding is not the mark of good driving, it can be tragic and costly.

"No driver can ever know what is round the next corner or junction. We will continue to target speeding motorists throughout the coming months."
