CONVERSION work to bring North Sea gas to homes in Bolton and surrounding districts is 'right on schedule', the North Western Gas Board said today.

It means that natural gas will be piped into most homes by early next year.

THE Government's decision on conscription was announced in the House of Commons this afternoon. Young men called up in 1947 will serve for two years, and 'if no unforeseen circumstances arise' the period will be progressively reduced for those called up in 1948, so that those whose service begins in December, 1948, will serve 18 months.

THE business of the annual moveable delegation of the Order of Druids was resumed this morning at ten o'clock, in the Co-operative Hall, Bolton. The meeting heard the accident compensation claims.

Ellis Greenhalgh, joiner, 37 years of age, a married man with a wife and six children under 15 years of age, and a member of the Conquering Hero Lodge, 126, Bury No. 2 District, who had his thigh fractured through a horse taking fright, was awarded £5. Joseph Longworth, 25 years of age, of the Worsley and Swinton district, whose spine was permanently injured through a fall of dirt and coal while he was engaged at Messrs. Knowles' colliery, Pendlebury, was allowed £10 as compensation. As soon as he became convalescent he was allowed 10 weeks pay at 4s per week by the lodge to which he belongs, and he is now engaged in hawking tea about the neighbourhood.
