ARSONISTS started a fire which badly damaged a disused social club last night.
The firebugs broke in and set light to rubbish in the kitchen of the Tyldesley Bowls and Social Club on Wells Street, Tyldesley.
Flames spread along timber cladding on the interior walls and reached the roof. Firefighters were called at about 7.30pm but by then the building was well alight.
Firemen wearing breathing apparatus battled with the flames but the club was severely damaged.
The bowling and social club has been boarded up since closing about four months ago.
