WATCHING all the sporting action of the Olympics in Atlanta is spurring Bolton people to boost local sports.
And they're not only taking more part in sporting activities, but more of them are taking coaching courses to help others to sporting excellence.
Ian Hepplewhite, youth sports' development officer for Bolton Metro Leisure Services, reports a good response on all the varied coaching courses they have been running recently.
"Viewing the Olympics - and, for many parents, seeing their children take part in the Bolton Olympics - has not only whetted their appetite for sport but encouraged them to become coaches themselves," he explained.
Sports being coached include badminton, athletics, cricket, football, basketball, gymnastics, rugby, and lifeguard courses. All the sports involve nationally-recognised qualifications, and in swimming and gymnastics, courses are available to help coaches teach people with special needs. "We've had enough public response to run all the different courses and some, like rugby and basketball, have been particularly popular," added Ian.
Several coaching courses are still coming up on the agenda for the rest of the year and into 1997. And, as Ian stresses, Sports Development Services are always keen to respond to requests for courses from local people interested in other sports. "Just give us a ring," he said.
