AN anonymous developer with a multi-million pound scheme to save the former Silverwell Sports Centre is to submit detailed plans to Bolton planning bosses.

The scheme would see the listed building transformed into a Information Technology Centre or "Cybercafe" and an exhibition centre while retaining its Victorian detail.

Planning bosses, who met last week were enthusiastic about the scheme and said they would like more information before making any decision.

An alternative scheme mooted could see the Grade 2 listed building flattened and turned into a pay and display car park.

Mr Peter Stott, of AFL Consulting, who is acting as agent for the mystery businessman, said the development was "very well received" by planning bosses. Mr Stott added: "They asked for more detailed plans and artist's impressions. They want to know exactly what the scheme entails.

"We will be submitting these plans in the next two or three weeks and these could then go before the council in September for a decision."

He said his client was still determined to go forward with the scheme which would save part of Bolton's heritage from being lost to make way for a car park.

The scheme would combine modern technology with the history of Bolton as the larger of the two drill halls would be developed into a themed Victorian street.
