LEIGH RMI 2 GLASGOW CELTIC 0 ALTHOUGH elated with his side's victory over a young Celtic side, Leigh RMI manager Steve Waywell was still playing down the significance of pre-season successes.
The Railwaymen are now unbeaten in four starts, winning three, and they have faced some strong opposition, but due to holidays the Celtic game was the first time Waywell had the chance to run the rule over his much-improved squad. "My assistant, Kevin Booth, has kept me informed with the progress we've made and we appreciate clubs like Bolton, Blackpool and Celtic sending teams to play us.
"But there is no pressure in these games and the players are allowed to play. When we get down to the nitty-gritty of the league, it will be a different ball game," said Waywell.
Leigh had the boost of a goal within two minutes and what a cracker it was. Keith Evans played Chris Bermingham away down the left and when the deep cross came in, Paul Kirkham planted a diving header into the far corner. Kirkham had a great chance to double his tally in the 20th minute when man of the match Paul Wheeler squared the ball to the striker who tamely fired into Andy McCondichie's arms.
The Railwaymen had to wait until the 70th minute before they sealed the victory. Graham Leishman, making his first appearance of the season, rounded off a great Tom McKenna and Chris Walmesley-inspired move, scoring with his first touch after replacing Kirkham.
Former Wanderers goalkeeper Dave Felgate made his debut for Leigh behind a solid-looking defence that kept its first clean sheet.
