BOLTON should bring work to the town's unemployed, an MP urged today. Mr Laurance Reed, MP for Bolton East, said the town could provide jobs by starting a public works programme with the unemployed fencing off old mill lodges, clearing derelict land and helping repair streets. Another suggestion is that the men could be used to clean the Croal Valley railway bridge over the new inner relief road. 50 YEARS AGO

THE illegal Jewish terrorist organization, Irgun Svai Leumi, which boasted responsibility for the Jerusalem bomb outrage, threatens 'new and heavy blows against our British enemies - even at the heart of their power. If another curfew such as Tel Aviv's recent one is imposed, the residents will receive orders to go into the streets at curfew time, and if the British start shooting there will be 1,000 British victims.'

SIR,- I think it is high time someone made complaints respecting the disgrace and annoyance that is carried on between Gilnow-lane and Deane Brow. Having to go up Pikes-lane you cannot pass on the footpath for groups of young men standing gaming, pigeon flying, &c, every day in the week, Sunday alike, which ought not to be allowed. I am at a loss to tell where our police are from morning till about nine o'clock at night, to allow such conduct to exist. Not one is to be seen in the lane between the times mentioned. I hope that these few remarks will receive the attention of our official authorities and put a stop to the above evil. Yours &c., A RATEPAYER.
