SIR: I see that Bolton council is at it again. It makes me wonder, does anybody on it have any grey matter when it comes to doing the simple things?

Silverwell Street closed for months, earning nothing, against the public's wishes. £500,000 to refurbish, so they spend £800,000 on a place we don't want.

No toilets in certain parts of the town, yet stating £1 million to be spent on the precinct. Shopkeepers in general don't want it. What matters most - crazy paving and hedges, or people's hygiene?

Now the old people's homes fiasco. People who have given everything in their hard lives through war and want are left to worry about their remaining years.

The council are always on about cuts to be made - this closing, that closing, but ratepayers never get a cut on their bill for loss of these services.

Let's see if these councillors are as quick to cut their own attendance and expense allowances this year.

I doubt it.

Well done, the BEN, for backing the old folk's corner. Somebody has to.
