LONE yachtsman Chay Blyth stepped ashore this afternoon to a spectacular welcome from his record-breaking 30,000-mile voyage around the world. Blyth arrived back at the tiny Hampshire village of Hamble - the starting point - after 292 days, and the first to welcome him on dry land were Prince Philip, Prince Charles and Princess Anne.

ACCORDING to Hollywood, talking pictures were 'born' 20 years ago today, for on August 6th, 1926, Warner brothers gave the world premiere of Vitaphone, the first commercially successful sound system. Warner's first sound film was 'The Jazz Singer', which was shown in America in 1927, and brought to England the following year. As far as Bolton is concerned, the first full-length talking picture to be seen here was 'The Singing Fool', which had a remarkably successful run at the Palladium during April and May, 1929. Previous to that only 'phono-film' short films had been shown.
