QUEENS Park could be restored to its former Victorian glory under plans being drawn up by Bolton Council's Leisure Services.

The aim is to breathe new life into the park which has fallen into disrepair and been targeted by vandals during the past few years.

It is hoped to get money for the ambitious plans from the Heritage Lottery Fund's 'Urban Parks' Initiative for an extensive five year programme.

But before it puts in a bid for cash, the council is turning to the public for ideas.

The Fund Initiative was set up to protect many urban parks throughout the country and the Council has already started an extensive consultation programme asking how local residents would like to see Queens Park developed.

Cllr Gerald Riley, chairman of Leisure Services, said: "Queens Park has been a jewel in Bolton's crown for many years but it does need work carrying out on it.

"The 'Urban Parks' scheme was set up to restore Victorian parks such as Queens Park and we wish to find out what people want for it before we put a bid forward."

Questionnaires are being sent to local residents, businesses and voluntary organisations.

In addition, anyone with memories, anecdotes or old photographs, or any local group wishing to be involved in the consultation process should contact Andrew Pomfret or Wesley Rourke, of the Policy and Projects Team in Leisure Services on 01204 522311, Extn 4116/4111.

Meanwhile, events will be held throughout the summer in Queens Park and these include a Children's Play Scheme and Fun Bus Tour from August 5 to 9, 10am to 3pm.
