BOLTON teenager Danny Gallagher has made all the right moves to get himself noticed on the national chess scene.
The Thornleigh School pupil recently came third in the under-14 section of the British Chess Championships, and then scooped joint first prize in a national junior tournament in Surrey.
But now Danny, aged 14, of New Tong Field, Bromley Cross, is searching for a 'chess mate' to help him progress.
Danny, a member of the Bolton Chess Club, hopes to find a sponsor so that he can continue travelling to compete in major tournaments, which are held throughout the country, and normally last several days.
He plays for the Bolton senior team and last year was in an England junior side against Norway.
His father, Sean, said: "To maintain his current standard he needs to play around the country, but that is expensive.
"The only way he can progress is by playing other top juniors and by top level coaching.
"Most of the competitions held throughout the country last a few days, some up to a week. This means we have to find travel and accommodation expenses."
Danny, a keen all-round sportsman, first started playing chess about five years ago when he joined the Bolton Chess Club.
Father, Sean, added: "He has done very well and is a very strong player for his age.
"He has enjoyed quite a successful time and we are very proud of him. But most importantly, he just enjoys doing it."
