A PARLIAMENTARY Ombudsman is to be called in to try to settle the row over compensation for Bury home owners affected by the M62 Relief Road fiasco.

Council chiefs in Bury want the Ombudsman to investigate how badly propert was blighted as a result of the original announcement of the scheme and its subsequent scrapping.

Chairman of Bury's M62 Relief Road Community Steering Group, Cllr Derek Boden is furious that residents have not been compensated. He said: "This whole situation has been handled badly from the word go."

Cllr Boden, who lives in the affected area, added: "It is scandalous that we are having to go down this road."

About 1,700 questionnaires have been sent to local residents who are being asked to air their grievances in detail, in an attempt to establish a series of manageable test cases for the Ombudsman to follow through.

Residents have until Friday, September 20 to return their completed questionnaires.
