NUDISTS in Italy are coming out of the shadows and launching a tradition-shattering offensive against the Pope, the Church, and all those who think nude and lewd go together. Nudism suddenly turned into a nationwide controversy this month with a report that the Mayor of a hillside village near Rome had offered land for what was advertised as the largest nudist centre in Europe. Local priests and nuns threatened to drive the Mayor out of a job.

Overnight though, it has been learned that thousands of Italians practise nudism at scores of secret nudists beaches, but shun publicity. Now a Socialist deputy has drafted a bill to make nudism legal in Italy.

THE anniversary festival of the Heck Warpers' Association was held on Saturday evening at the house of Mr Greenwood, the Millstone Inn, Crown-street, when about 180 of the members and their friends sat down to a most excellent dinner. After the report, Mr James Stephenson was called upon to preside, and a round of loyal, patriotic and other toasts was gone through, including the Mayor and Corporation and the Borough Members. The chairman gave the toast to the evening, "Success to the Heck Warpers' Association", which was acknowledged by Mr John Bottomley, who also gave "Life is a River" with good effect. A variety of singing and reciting, interspersed with dancing, composed the amusements of an enjoyable evening, which closed with the usual votes of thanks to the chairman, the committee and the host and hostess.
