work is set to start soon on improving one of Bolton's busiest road junctions.
Council chiefs are planning to put a red man-green man crossing patrol at the junction of Tonge Moor Road and Crompton Way.
They are also going to put in a left-hand turning lane from Crompton Way coming from Astley Bridge into Tonge Moor Road towards Bradshaw Brow.
However, this is a very much scaled-down version of a major scheme which was planned for this junction.
Council chiefs were told earlier this year by the Department of Transport that they could not have the £1 million needed for the scheme.
The works which will be carried out are costing £250,000.
Mr Adrian Golland, assistant director of planning and engineering services, said: "We did have the money set aside for this.
"So it was decided to make a start and then if more money becomes available at a later date, then the rest of the scheme can be completed."
