WORKERS at one of Bolton's largest remaining spinning mills, newly back from holiday, have been told the factory is to close. About 350 operatives at Cannon Bros. Ltd in Cannon Street, Bolton, will lose their jobs as the result of a closure which was described as 'scandalous' today by the workers' union leader, Mr Jack Brown. It is one of the few local mills which has been on full-time working during the present textile recession, but was recently taken over by the Spirella Group in a £659,000 deal.

ON the 7th inst. the brig Bothen, of Portsmouth, George Brown, master, bound from Liverpool for Riga with a cargo of salt, entered the harbour of Stornaway making a good deal of water, having experienced very severe weather and shipped heavy seas, and the vessel straining very much on the voyage. Since then she has been surveyed by two surveyors, who have recommended certain repairs, to render her fit to proceed upon her voyage; but some of a crew consider that the repairs would not be sufficient, and demand that the cargo should be discharged and the vessel put upon the slip for a thorough overhaul. This not being complied with, four of the crew struck work. On Saturday the men were brought before the justices and committed to the Stornaway Prison for two days, at the expiration of which period they were expected to return to the vessel.
