HELP the Aged is expanding its home safety initiative in the area with the launch of the HandyVan scheme.

The £3.5m scheme, funded by Littlewood Lotteries, builds on the charity's on-going programme that aims to help the elderly remain in their homes for longer.

The scheme, launched today, enables the elderly to get security and safety devices installed in their homes.

The director general of Help the Aged, John Mayo, said: "The evidence is clear that older people want to live at home for as long as possible but often need extra help.

"Our HandyVan scheme is a very practical way of helping senior citizens live independently.

"Our fitters and their HandyVans will provide older people with a trustworthy service and peace of mind."

The HandyVan scheme will operate in eleven counties. Help the Aged aims to install safety and security equipment in the homes of 20,000 older people over the next three years.
