A FATHER kept his cool to help save his baby daughter's life after a toy peg became jammed down her throat.

Little Sofie McPherson-Booth was playing with her elder sisters and brother when she fell head first on to the plastic peg.

Her parents Kevan and Wendy, of Lower Leigh Road, Westhoughton, were alerted by the screams of their other children and found 12-month-old Sofie on the floor with blood coming from her mouth.

As Wendy rushed to call the emergency services, Kevan tried to dislodge the 3ins long peg that had come from a toy work bench.

Kevan explained: "I could just see the top of the peg. It was stuck fast and she was having trouble breathing."

Somehow Kevan kept calm and although he could not get the peg out he managed to make an airway.

"We rushed her out of the house and sat on the wall as we waited for the ambulance. I held her face down to help her breath and didn't dare let go of the peg," he added.

Paramedics were also unable to get the peg out and Sofie was rushed to Bolton General Hospital.
