ADOPTED Boltonian Chris Gardner has been elected chairman of a world charity that specialises in rescuing penguins.
Chris emigrated to South Africa in 1983 after marrying Tonge Moor woman Janet McGuire. They have two daughters - Emma Jayne and Catherine Louise and a son, Christopher.
The family have been heavily involved in environmental projects since their arrival in South Africa and all three children have won conservation awards.
Chris was nominated this week as an entrant in the World Wildlife Fund for Nature Green Trust Environmental Awards for his work in eco-education.
He said: "If we do not try and protect our planet in some way it will disappear before our eyes and we as a family are trying to do our small bit where we can."
The organisation Chris is now chairing has treated more than 1,500 oiled and sick penguins from around the South African coast.
