SIR: The Heritage Minister has said recently "We are at the beginning of a Renaissance in Britain's cultural and sporting life". Oh aye! Could part of this cultural life be the proposed 'Imperial War Museum' at Singing Clough, Kearsley?

It is ironic that Britain is populated by people whose homelands have been ravaged by the excesses of British Imperialism, by the propping up of dictatorships with the help of an arms industry still flourishing here in the north. The last thing the people of this area need is a monument glorifying the instruments of rape, pillage and murder.

Countless millions from this and other countries have been slaughtered in the furtherance of 'Imperialist' causes.

We do not wish to be patronised by claptrap such as 'it will bring in millions through tourism'.

The only benefit from such a museum will be to the inflated egos of the 'Establishment' and the sabre rattlers and arms manufacturers.
